Woman's bakery is on rise

Joan Howes grew up in the kitchen. The Western
New York native learned the art of the cookie from her mother and grandmother.

“I’ve never worked a day in a bakery,” she says. Despite her lack of formal training, Howes baked for friends and family out of her Niagara Falls home for years, and became known as the go-to woman for Italian wedding cookies.

“It got to a point where I was doing so many weddings and parties, it was too much to do from home,” she says.

In 2007, Howes took the plunge and opened her own bakery in Niagara Falls.
